Hamilton fastest as Mercs back on top

Lewis Hamilton resumed normal service during the second session of Friday practice for the Canadian Grand Prix by topping the timesheets 0.175s ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton had the edge over his team-mate when it came down to the super-soft tyre runs, and despite Rosberg briefly holding the fastest lap, Hamilton hit back with a quick lap to assert his dominance early in the weekend. Sebastian Vettel clocked the third fastest time, but took on the super-soft tyres at a later stage than the rest of the top ten, meaning he had better track conditions for his quick lap.

Kimi Raikkonen bounced back from his engine issues in FP1 to set the fourth fastest time, 0.053s quicker than team-mate Fernando Alonso who had been the fastest driver in the morning session. However, despite his pace, Raikkonen had an unusual spin coming out of the Turn 10 hairpin when his Ferrari swapped ends as he lit up the rear tyres.

Williams also showed signs of a resurgence with Felipe Massa sixth fastest following ERS issues in the morning session and Valtteri Bottas setting the seventh fastest time. The McLarens followed in eighth and ninth ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne who rounded out the top ten in the Toro Rosso.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo failed to set a quick lap on the super-softs after appearing to struggle with his gearshifts at one stage in the session. He ended up 12th fastest behind the Lotus of Romain Grosjean in 11th. Force India appear to be off the pace despite the power advantage of the Mercedes engine in the back of the VJM07 with Nico Hulkenberg 13th and Sergio Perez 14th.

Daniil Kvyat only managed nine laps and did not get out on the super-softs due to an issue earlier in the session, while Jules Bianchi completed just three laps. Marcus Ericsson also had his session cut short when he ran straight on at Turn 3 with a problem on his Caterham.
