Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet scored and was sent off in three dramatic first-half minutes, leaving his side to play with 10 men for over an hour, in a 1-1 draw at Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Payet fired Marseille in front in the 16th minute from Florian Thauvin's pass, squeezing a shot between goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and the foot of the post for his first goal of the season.
But the 33-year-old quickly turned villain as he almost immediately lunged recklessly at Leo Dubois's ankle. Referee Stephanie Frappart initially showed a yellow card but changed it to a red after a VAR review.
Houssem Aouar equalised for Lyon with a penalty in the 28th minute after Melvin Bard went down under challenge from Alvaro Gonzalez.
Tino Kadewere had the ball in the net for Lyon three minutes before halftime but it was disallowed for offside after another VAR review.
Lyon, last season's Champions League semi-finalists, dominated the second half as expected but, despite 24 shots on goal and 19 corners, were unable to find a winner, leaving them with seven points after drawing for the fourth time in six games. Marseille are 10th with nine points.
