Arsenal win after taking Liverpool to penalties

Arsenal defeated Liverpool on penalties after scoreless draw in regulation to advance to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.

The win at Anfield for the Gunners comes after they had lost to the hosts this past weekend in Premier League action. It is also the second time Arsenal have defeated Liverpool on penalties in as many months, following August's Community Shield win at Wembley.

Bernd Leno stopped Harry Wilson's effort during the shootout with Joseph Willock then sealing the win on a dribbler that crept past Liverpool keeper Adrian.

The match was riddled with missed chances from both sides, but Leno's excellent night for Arsenal between the sticks kept the Gunners in the match. Liverpool had a golden opportunity right before halftime when Takumi Minamino's effort bounced off the crossbar, after Leno had parried Diogo Jota's strike into the crosshairs of the Japanese star.

Leno then came up with two spectacular saves in the second half, the first in the 63rd minute off Jota's well-placed shot and then moments later on Marko Grujic's arching header from a corner kick.
