Rooney a doubt for Bayern showdown
Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of star striker Wayne Rooney ahead of their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich.
The 28-year-old England international will sit out the trip to Newcastle United this weekend, with United boss David Moyes hoping that Rooney will recover from a toe injury in time to feature in the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
The tie with Bayern is evenly poised at 1-1 following the first leg at Old Trafford, with United 7.00 to reach the semi-finals and 34.00 to go on and lift the trophy, while reigning champions Bayern are 1.11 to make the last four.
Moyes told MUTV: "Wayne's got a badly bruised toe.
"He's got a terrible toe. Not only is it a problem for this game (Newcastle), it could be a problem for the Munich match.
"We need to monitor it. We'll get him treatment all over the weekend and see if we can speed it up."
Meanwhile, Moyes remains upbeat about the prospects of Robin van Persie returning to action before the end of the season, with the Dutch striker currently sidelined by a knee problem.
"Robin is over in Holland having treatment and we get a daily update of exactly how he is," Moyes added. "He's doing all of his recovery and rehab back there. He's coming on, as far as we know.
"I was told four to six weeks by the doctors and there hasn't been any reason to tell me any more or any less time. My hope was that we would get him back before the end of the season, that's for sure."
