Renault want Red Bull pole
Renault feel a pole position from Red Bull is the only way they can show their Formula One engine has closed the gap on rivals Mercedes' power unit.
The French manufacturer has enjoyed three wins so far this season with Red Bull following a disappointing start when their engine was lagging behind Mercedes.
However their head of trackside operations Remi Taffin claims the race wins were partly down to problems encountered by the Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in Canada, Hungary and Belgium.
And he feels that a true sign of how far the Renault engine has improved will be when they are the fastest in qualification, possibly starting at this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix on the Marina Bay circuit.
"We know we can win races, and we are just in the position to be sure that we can grab this when there is opportunity," said Taffin.
"But what we are effectively after now is a pole position to show the pure pace - and it would obviously be easier to win a race in this condition."
Taffin also confirmed that Renault will not be looking to upgrade this current engine anymore as they are now focused on producing a stronger unit in 2015.
He said: "The most effort in terms of achieving what we wanted to achieve is behind us for this year," he explained.
"What we now get on track is actually the fruit of this work - and we now have the right direction to go for optimising the performance, plus we are able to repeat this every single race."
Taffin added: "So we will try to bring a little bit more race after race until the end of the year.
"But even if the focus is to try to get the most out of this year, we have to focus on next year."
