Trap won't wait on Gibson

Giovanni Trapattoni has warned Darron Gibson that his Republic of Ireland place will not be left open indefinitely.

Gibson, 24, pulled out of the Ireland squad for Friday's World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan after deciding he did not want to play under the Italian.

His decision was sparked by the fact that he was restricted to a place on the bench for all three of his country's matches at Euro 2012.

Everton manager David Moyes has declared his belief that Gibson will return to the international set-up after a break, but Trapattoni has told the midfielder not to wait too long, because he risks closing off a way back into the squad.

"I spoke with Gibson for a long time," the Ireland coach said. "He explained to me that he was disappointed. I understood but I said to him that we were all disappointed after the defeats in the Euro campaign, but I said that this is a time for a new opportunity."

The former Italy manager feels that Ireland now possess more strength in depth, and can cope without Gibson.

"In the past, we were frightened about missing players, but now we already have a squad. We have also been watching new players. Maybe we will discover a new Irish player. He has to decide whether he wants to play or not."

Ireland lost all three of their matches at Euro 2012, with Trapattoni refusing to bring on Gibson even for their final group game against Italy, when his team were already out.

The Italian argued that making changes just to give players a run-out would have made it look as though he was favouring his home country in a tight group.

"It was impossible to change," Trapattoni explained. "With 20 minutes to go in our match, Italy could have gone out and Croatia could qualify. If we changed it and we lost, it would have looked like I favoured Italy.
