Montpellier lose top spot

Montpellier conceded three times in seven second-half minutes at Evian and lost their hopes of staying top of the Ligue 1 table heading into the winter break.

Rene Girard's side had looked on course for victory, in the final game before the three-week hiatus, after Ligue 1's leading goalscorer Olivier Giroud and Younes Belhanda struck either side of Cedric Barbosa's equaliser.

But after Saber Khelifa equalised again on 69 minutes Evian stormed back to claim a fourth successive home win with goals from Cedric Cambon and Brice Djadjedje.

Defeat for Montpellier means they will be replaced at the top by Paris St Germain if the capital club can take a point at St Etienne in tonight's late kick-off.

Evian had the best chances of a goalless first half and former Montpellier midfielder Barbosa saw an early free-kick deflect off Christian Poulsen only for Geoffrey Jourdren to pull off a great save.

Barbosa was proving a threat from free-kicks and he picked out Aldo Angoula who saw his header pushed onto the post by Jourdren, who then also kept out Daniel Wass.

After riding their luck, Montpellier took the lead two minutes after half-time when Belhanda, who had just come on at the break, netted after Stephan Anderson's challenge on John Utaka fell kindly to him.

Evian equalised on 52 minutes when, following a counter-attack, Barbosa nicked in just ahead of the Jourdren to flick the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Montpellier were ahead again just two minutes later when Giroud beat the off-side trap and lifted it over the goalkeeper for his 13th goal of the season.

At that stage Montpellier looked to have weathered the storm but Evian came roaring back when, after 69 minutes, Guillaume Rippert delivered a perfect cross for Khelifa to prod in.

Evian were then ahead on 71 minutes when, after a corner was awarded despite Barbosa going down in the area, Cambon powerfully headed in the resultant flag kick.

The hosts then had a clear-water lead on 75 minutes when Djadjedje smashed in a free-kick for his side's fourth goal in 30 minutes.
