Jurgen Klopp expressed his pride in Borussia Dortmund after his side fell just short and saw Real Madrid end their Champions League hopes on Tuesday.

Trailing 3-0 after the first leg, few gave Klopp's men a chance to even the score at the Westfalenstadion, but Dortmund scored twice and gave Real a few scares before going down 3-2 on aggregate.

"When I high-fived our injured player Neven Subotic after the game, he told me how proud he was to be a part of this team and this is exactly how I see it as well," Klopp said.

"You simply had to produce a video of this game and show it to all the teams that have ever lost a first leg 3-0."

Dortmund received a lifeline when Madrid winger Angel Di Maria missed an early penalty -- a call Klopp disagreed with -- and they responded by scoring twice through Marco Reus during a first-half onslaught.

"The lads wanted to go through, we were unable to show that in Madrid, but today we were capable of showing that 100 percent," Klopp said. "We were clearly the better side today and we really should have scored more goals, but because the game and our performance was so extraordinarily good I really will not make accusations to anyone today.

"The atmosphere was extraordinary, but we were capable of lighting an early beacon of hope to show that something was still possible tonight. It was a simply extraordinary night."

Klopp was left to lament the his side's failure to score in Madrid.

"That is where we lost this tie, we played badly there," Klopp said.
