Vitiello denies Roma at the death

Siena defender Roberto Vitiello struck a late equaliser to deny Roma their first Serie A win of the season at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night.

The hosts looked to be heading for a narrow victory after Pablo Osvaldo scored his first goal for Roma in the 25th minute.

But Roma wasted several chances to extend their lead and Siena, also looking for their first triumph, pushed forward in the second half and were rewarded.

Franco Brienza's strike from the edge of the area rebounded off the post and fell to Vitiello, who fired past Roma goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont.

Roma coach Luis Enrique made several changes to the squad that held Inter Milan to a goalless draw at the weekend.

Lobont replaced injured Maarten Stekelenburg in goal while Marco Borriello was handed his first start of the season.

Borriello partnered Franesco Totti and Osvaldo up front.

The visitors should have taken a 15th-minute lead when Franco Brienza got his head to Angelo's cross, only for his powerful effort to be kept out by Lobont.

Shortly after, Totti fed Borriello inside the area and he hit the ball just wide of Zeljko Brkic's far post.

Roma then went in front. Borriello set up Oslvado and the South American tapped the ball into the back of the net.

Siena almost pulled level on the stroke of half-time. Angelo got behind Simone Vergassola's pass and his right-footed shot from 10 yards was kept out by Lobont.

Roma should have doubled their advantage early in the second half but Brkic punched away Osvaldo's bullet strike from 30 yards.

Brkic was called on twice to make saves from the long-range efforts of Jose Angel and Totti.

Siena almost silenced the Stadio Olimpico fans in the 69th minute when Pablo Gonzalez's six-yard header forced Roma defender Simon Kjaer to clear with Lobont already beaten.

The visitors continued to press forward and with 15 minutes remaining Lobont had to stretch to knock away Andrea Rossi's right-footed strike from eight yards.

Roma should have put the game beyond Siena's reach with five minutes to go but Fabio Borini's bullet strike went wide of the far post.

Siena pulled level two minutes from time with Vitiello scoring his first goal of the campaign, following up after Brienza had hit the post with a rasping effort.
