Brescia with a win over Sampdoria |
 |
Mario Beretta celebrated a winning start to life in charge of Brescia thanks to a 1-0 win over Sampdoria.
Nicolas Cordova's goal in the 13th minute was enough to earn the Serie A strugglers an important three points to keep them above the bottom three.
Samp enjoyed most of the possession, but once again were left wanting in front of goal as they remain eighth in the table.
Beretta took over as Brescia coach from Giuseppe Iachini earlier this week and the change seemed to have the desired effect.
He made several changes to the standard starting XI, bringing back fans' favourite Davide Possanzini in his attack and Marco Zambelli and Francesco Bega in the centre of his defence.
However, it was the Blucerchiati who enjoyed a better start until they gave away what seemed to be a harmless free-kick 30 yards from goal.
Cordova stepped up to shoot through the wall and past Gianluca Curci, who made a poor attempt to save the ball with his legs and was left red faced as the ball went in for the only goal of the game.
Samp coach Domenico Di Carlo was already down to his last men in defence due to an injury to Daniele Gastaldello which ruled him out this morning.
The sight of his replacement Fabrizio Cacciatore limping off just before half time with Pietro Accardi coming on would not have been a pleasant one.
The visitors tried their best to get back into the game, but they were wasteful in front of goal.
The best chance fell to Giampaolo Pazzini, but his volley from Daniele Mannini's cross was saved by Matteo Sereni in the 70th minute.
Four minutes later, Samp were claiming a penalty when Angelo Palombo seemed to be pushed inside the area by Zambelli, but the referee waved play on.
With their backs to the wall, Brescia held on to a crucial three points, particularly since fellow strugglers Lecce were also triumphant today.
