Roma with a 3-2 victory over Fiorentina |
 |
Roma claimed their third straight win in Serie A with a 3-2 home triumph over Fiorentina tonight.
Fabio Simplicio broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time and Marco Borriello doubled Roma's lead shortly after the restart.
Alberto Gilardino reduced the arrears in the 69th minute for the Viola but substitute Simone Perrotta made it 3-1 with 13 minutes remaining. Substitute Gaetano D'Agostino then scored with a free-kick to give the visitors a lifeline, but Roma held on for the victory.
The win lifted Roma, who had an awful start to the campaign, to sixth in the standings, while Fiorentina remain winless on the road and fall to 13th.
The home side went into the match in a buoyant mood after their 2-0 triumph at Lazio on Sunday and had the first chance in the seventh minute when Borriello headed wide from Cicinho's cross.
Midway through the first half, Fiorentina goalkeeper Artur Boruc made his first save while clearing Borriello4s close-range header.
At the other end, Marco Marchionni4s six-yard shot forced Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio to dive to his right and clear.
In the 38th minute, Adrian Mutu's header from Mario Santana4s cross went wide of the far post.
Roma took the lead before the break when Borriello4s cross found Simplicio inside the six-yard box and he struck the ball past Boruc.
Roma kept up the pressure and doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Jeremy Menez picked out Borriello at the far post and he made no mistake from close range.
Shortly after the hour mark, Gilardino got the Viola back in the game, latching onto Adem Ljajic4s cross and beating Sergio.
The visitors surged forward in search of the equaliser but instead, Roma struck.
Boruc went to clear Menez4s long cross but tripped and Perrotta made sure to punish the goalkeeper.
With one minute remaining, Fiorentina made it 3-2 as Sergio could not keep out D4Agostino4s curling free-kick, but Roma held on for victory.
