Hamsik sets Napoli on their way |
|
Napoli claimed their first Serie A win at the Stadio San Paolo this season as two late goals sunk Roma.
Marek Hamsik got the ball rolling for Napoli in the 72nd minute before Roma defender Juan deflected Hugo Campagnaro's cross into his own net with seven minutes remaining.
The result lifted Napoli to second in the standings, level on 11 points with AC Milan after six games played.
The Romans, meanwhile, plummeted to 19th place.
Roma, who had not lost at Napoli since 1997, went into the encounter inspired by their first wins in Serie A and in the Champions League group stages, but it was the hosts who started stronger.
Ezequiel Lavezzi connected with Christian Maggio's cross from the left but his effort was met by a fine save from Roma goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont.
Napoli should have taken the lead in the 32nd minute.
A sweeping move from the hosts saw Lavezzi cross to Hamsik and his left-foot shot from six yards was parried away by Lobont.
At the other end, Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis did well to stretch fully and get a touch on Marco Borriello's powerful header.
Before the break, De Sanctis was forced to come off his line and clear Borriello's cross, with an unmarked Jeremy Menez waiting inside the area.
The hosts should have broken the deadlock before the hour mark.
Edison Cavani's bullet strike from outside the area forced Lobont to clear with his foot.
Napoli's prayers were answered with 18 minutes remaining.
Lavezzi got behind Andrea Dossena's cross and his powerful volley from the heart of the area beat Lobont.
Roma struggled as Napoli defended deeply and disaster struck for the visitors soon after.
There was little Lobont could do with Juan's clearance of Campagnaro's cross going into the back of the net.
