Frey saves point |
 |
Sebastien Frey earned Fiorentina a point with a string of spectacular saves in his side's draw at Genoa tonight.
Alberto Gilardino put the Viola ahead in the 11th minute but Giandomenico Mesto equalised for the hosts in the 18th minute.
Frey then took centre stage to deny Genoa with five stunning saves to rescue a point for the visitors.
Fiorentina went ahead in the 11th minute when Juan Vargas' low cross took a slight deflection, aiding Gilardino in getting his toe to the ball to divert it into the bottom corner.
The home side reacted well and were level seven minutes later.
Mesto played a one-two with Miguel Veloso inside the penalty area and then lashed his right-footed shot across Frey into the far corner.
Frey might have been beaten on that occasion but he made three spectacular saves to ensure his side were still in the game at the interval.
Domenico Criscito was denied first as his powerful shot was parried and Luca Toni's follow-up header was easy pickings for the French goalkeeper.
Rodrigo Palacio then tested Frey, who was unable to keep hold of the ball and Giuseppe Sculli's follow-up had to be tipped over by the Fiorentina number one.
And at the close of the first half, Toni's flash header at the near post was again pushed away instinctively by Frey.
The Fiorentina custodian was in the thick of the action in the second half too.
He pushed Toni's acrobatic overhead kick away in the 69th minute and diverted Criscito's angled shot behind for a corner two minutes later.
At the other end, Fiorentina almost took advantage of an error by Genoa's goalkeeper Eduardo, who raced from his line but failed to claim the ball, leaving Alessio Curci with the chance to curl a shot against the far post.
Riccardo Montolivo followed up but Eduardo made amends by saving well.
