Lionel Messi made a dream debut as captain as Argentina began their 2014 World Cup qualification campaign with a 4-1 thrashing of Chile.
Messi scored once in the convincing win, while Gonzalo Higuain bagged a hat-trick to get Argentina off to the perfect start.
It took just eight minutes for Argentina to take control of the match when Angel Di Maria set up his Real Madrid team-mate Higuain to score the opener, before Messi scored his 18th goal for the national team on 26 minutes.
Di Maria was in the action again after the interval, setting up the third goal in the 51st minute when he found Higuain inside the area. Matias Fernandez then pulled a goal back for Chile on the hour mark, before Messi capped the victory by allowing Higuain to seal his hat-trick just three minutes later.
Uruguay also got their campaign off to the right start with a 4-2 triumph over Bolivia in Montevideo.
Uruguay grabbed the lead just three minutes in through a Luis Suarez strike from close range as the Bolivian defence struggled to clear a Diego Forlan corner.
Bolivia then came up with a goal of their own when Rudy Cardozo saw Fernando Muslera off his line to snare a shock equaliser. However, the Bolivians again struggled with a Forlan corner, as captain Diego Lugano headed home to restore Uruguay's lead.
Edinson Cavani scored a third just prior to the interval before Lugano capped the win with another goal midway through the second stanza. Marcelo Martins struck for the visitors from the penalty spot, but it was not enough to claim a share of the spoils.
Ecuador defeated Venezuela 2-0 thanks to first-half goals from Jaime Corozo and Cristian Benitez in Quito.
Peru, meanwhile, scored twice through Paulo Guerrero to claim a 2-0 win over Paraguay in the other match on Friday.
