Huntelaar the hero for Holland |
|
Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the only goal as Holland defeated Turkey in a friendly international in Amsterdam.
Huntelaar struck after 52 minutes when he found the net from the edge of the area.
Turkey threatened first when Hamit Altintop's free-kick was cleared and then Burak Yilmaz saw his shot saved by Maarten Stekelenburg.
Altintop's corner was then cleared before Yilmaz had another shot kept out by Stekelenburg.
It was 15 minutes before Holland's first chance but Rafael van der Vaart's free-kick was cleared by Servet Cetin.
Van der Vaart missed with another effort before Holland's best chance of the half came when Wesley Sneijder hit a free-kick into the wall before seeing his own follow-up punched clear by Volkan Demirel.
Van der Vaart missed with a free-kick before Ibrahim Afellay fired over the bar as neither side could break the deadlock before half-time.
Holland made three changes at half-time including the introduction of Arsenal striker Robin van Persie following an ankle injury.
Van Persie set up Van der Vaart but he shot wide before Holland took the lead when Huntelaar fired home.
Ten minutes into the second half Turkey were denied when Stekelenburg caught a shot from the edge of the area by Yilmaz who was again proving his side's best attacking threat.
Turkey were given the chance to get back into the game when Gregory Van Der Wiel's foul on Ismail Koybais presented Nuri Sahin with a free-kick which picked out Servet Cetin, but his header was saved at the expense of a corner by Stekelenburg.
Sahin took the corner but Johnny Heitinga cleared before Yilmaz shot wide as Turkey again pressed.
With 15 minutes to go Turkey substitute Colin Kazim Richards hit a left-footed shot from outside the area but missed the target.
Engin Baytar then saw his shot go over the bar as Turkey struggled to find a way back into the game.
With five minutes to go Selcuk Inan became the first player booked, for a foul on Afellay.
Stekelenburg was on hand to catch a late effort by Kazim Richards.
In the dying seconds Holland's Ryan Babel headed over the bar and the home side ran out comfortable winners.
