Carvalho urges Portugal defence to tighten up |
|
Portugal captain Ricardo Carvalho says that his side will look to tighten up at the back against Norway after their thrilling 4-4 draw with Cyprus on Friday night.
Carvalho's side were shocked by the lowly Cypriots in Guimaraes having conceded just four goals in their previous 19 games and the captain has issued a rallying call to his team-mates to ensure their Euro 2012 qualification campaign gets back on track.
"Our focus was good going into the game," he told the UEFA website. "But we started badly, and even though we got into a winning position we didn't manage to go on and get the win. We could have scored a fifth goal [when leading 4-3] but didn't and in the end we ended up with the draw.
"We have to be more compact, especially at the back. We played well going forward but we're normally more secure in defence."
Defender Fabio Coentrao, one of the stars of the World Cup who will miss the game through injury, claimed that Portugal can bounce back from the draw.
"It happens; mistakes are part of football. We have to get our heads up for the game against Norway and come back," he said. "We're going there to win. It didn't go as we wanted but that's football. I'm sure we're going to win in Norway."
