Didier Drogba set for stunning return |
 |
Didier Drogba could be fit for Ivory Coast's World Cup opener against Portugal after successfully returning to training on Thursday.
After being seen with his recently broken right arm in a sling earlier in the day, key striker Drogba was spotted moving freely and waving to fans with his injured limb in the evening training session, boosting his chances of featuring in his team's critical Group G clash with Portgual on June 15.
Drogba underwent surgery last weekend after suffering the break in a friendly match against Japan and although he is still wearing a light protective cast around his forearm, coach Sven-Goran Eriksson believes he could make a far speedier recovery than first feared.
"If the match had been today or tomorrow, he wouldn't be able to play,'' Eriksson said. "But it's in a few days. He might play.''
Drogba is key to Ivory Coast's hopes of progressing out of Group G, which also includes Brazil and North Korea. The African Player of the Year scored 37 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last season and his absence would be a major blow, especially as the first match may decide which nation goes through to the second round with Brazil.
