Rooney concern for World Cup |
|
Wayne Rooney aggravated a groin injury in Manchester United's 4-0 win over Stoke but is still expected to be fit for the World Cup.
Rooney looked to be in discomfort during the match and limped off 13 minutes from the end, and there are concerns that he has suffered a recurrence of the groin injury that has kept him out in recent weeks.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson believes he will make a swift recovery and has calmed fears it could jeopardise his England hopes this summer.
"He has aggravated his groin again," Sir Alex Ferguson said. "I don't think it is serious. I think he will be okay for England."
Fabio Capello names his preliminary 30-man squad for South Africa on Tuesday.
Under the circumstances, the England manager might not want to risk Rooney on the difficult Wembley surface when England tackle Mexico for a world Cup warm-up match on May 24.
That would give Rooney three weeks to get fit for the final friendly against Japan in Austria, and then almost two more before England open their Group C campaign against the United States in Rustenburg on June 12.
