Marseille move into third |
|
Marseille earned a precious away point at Auxerre as they moved into third place on goal difference.
Loic Remy gave Marseille a dream start with an eighth-minute opener, but his side's hopes were hamstrung by Stephen Mbia's sending off seven minutes before the break.
Mbia's foul on Julien Quercia allowed Valter Birsa to equalise from the spot and 1-1 was the way it stayed.
The first real chance of the game led to a goal, with Remy heading home from close range after a cross from Evanilson Brandao.
The visitors had a chance to make it two shortly after, with Souleymane Diawara nodding just inches wide after a corner from Lucho Gonzalez.
The opportunities continued to flow for Marseille, with Mathieu Valbuena finding himself free at the near post only to see his volley hacked off the line by Dennis Oliech.
Auxerre were fortunate not to be further adrift and, buoyed by their reprieves, went into the break level.
Mbia's foul on Quercia earned him a red card and Birsa did the rest from the spot.
Marseille looked to get back ahead after the break, with Remy's header superbly saved by Olivier Sorin, while Auxerre almost netted themselves when Kamel Chafni's volley flew just over the bar.
Remy was intent on trying to turn his goal into a brace and another header brought another save out of Sorin, before the striker's low hit was scrambled clear by Dariusz Dudka.
There was to be no second for Remy or Marseille, though, and as it was Auxerre could have won it with seconds remaining, only for Anthony Le Tallec to blaze wide when well set.
