Modeste hands ten men victory |
 |
Anthony Modeste grabbed the winner as 10-man Bordeaux added to Auxerre's worries by securing victory at Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps.
Modeste's diving header gave Les Girondins a 19th minute lead but they played the last 21 minutes a man down after Alou Diarra was given a second yellow card for foolishly pushing the referee.
But the visitors held on to leave their hosts only above the drop zone on goal difference.
Jean Tigana's side had the better of the first half and could have gone ahead in the 18th minute as Jaroslav Plasil's pass saw Wendel unleash a superb volley that had Olivier Sorin scrambling to make an agile save.
But just a minute later Modeste lost his marker at another Plasil corner and found the net with a diving header.
Auxerre sought an equaliser before the break but Daruisz Dudka just failed to connect with the ball at the far post after a corner.
The hosts then began the second half in purposeful fashion as a Cedric Hengbart crossed for Alain Traor but Cedric Carrasso made the save.
Delvin Ndinga then blazed wildly over the bar before Bordeaux were reduced to 10 men.
Diarra fouled Traor and reacted angrily when the referee produced a yellow card, pushing the official, prompting a second yellow and a red to follow in quick succession.
Diarra then apologised to the two assistant referees as he left the field.
But Auxerre could not take advantage of their numerical advantage and it was the visitors who came closest to a goal as Pierre Ducasse's free-kick skimmed the crossbar.
