Rennes climb to top of the table |
 |
Rennes moved to the top of the Ligue 1 table for the first time in 40 years with a comfortable victory over Toulouse at Stade de la Route de Lorient.
Romain Danze struck just before half-time to give the hosts the lead and Kader Mangane and Sylvain Marveaux put the result beyond doubt before Moussa Sissoko's consolation for Alain Casanova's side.
Rennes, who finished ninth last season, started strongly as Yann M'Vila tried his luck from distance but Toulouse keeper Mathieu Valverde was equal to his effort.
Kevin Theophile-Catherine also went close for Rennes while the visitors' only genuine effort on goal arrived after 36 minutes as early substitute Daniel Braaten forced an agile save from Nicolas Douchez with an angled drive.
But Rennes seized the initiative just a minute before the break as Marveaux laid the ball off from a Victor Hugo Montano pass for Danze to blast a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.
Chances continued to come the way of the hosts as Jires Ekoko's lob was cleared off the line by Mauro Cetto after Valverde had been left stranded.
Montano then shot inches wide as the pressure increased and it told in the 77th minute when Jerome Leroy found Mangane from a free-kick and the Senegal defender turned the ball home.
Four minutes later it was 3-0 as Valverde brought down Abdoul Camara and Marveaux slotted home from the spot.
A poor defensive clearance allowed Sissoko to volley home for Toulouse late on, but it was far too little, too late.
