Makou hands Lyon first win |
 |
Lyon belatedly claimed their first win of the season with a narrow victory over Brest.
An opening draw against Monaco was followed by a stunning 3-2 upset at the hands of Caen in a slow start which could prove costly later in the season as Lyon seek to reclaim a title they began to regard as their private property during a seven-year run that ended two seasons ago.
But they were back on track today as Jean Makoun's first-half goal earned them all three points against newly-promoted Brest, who are without a win from their opening three games.
Bafetimbi Gomis had the first opportunity of the game for Lyon, controlling the ball on his chest before hitting a right-footed shot on the turn which went narrowly wide.
Hugo Lloris saved from Larsen Toure at the other end, but Lyon raced into attack and scored soon after.
Cesar Delgado crossed for Jimmy Briand and the ball dropped for Makoun to fire in after 18 minutes.
Gomis and Briand then combined to set up an opportunity for Briand, but Steeve Elana saved.
Brest came close to a leveller six minutes into the second half as Brahim Ferradj raced down the left wing and crossed for Toure, who hit the crossbar with a header.
Toure shot inches wide a minute later before Elana smothered the ball as Gomis bore down on goal in the opposite penalty area.
Brest had a late opportunity to find the equaliser, but again failed to find the target as Bruno Grougi shot wide.
