Marseille pick up first win |
 |
Marseille picked up their first points of the Ligue 1 season at the third attempt as the defending champions recorded a much needed win against Lorient this evening.
A goal in each half from Gabriel Heinze and Taye Taiwo earned victory for the hosts, who had started the defence of their crown with defeats to Caen and Valenciennes.
OM were without expensive recruits Andre-Pierre Gignac and Loic Remy.
Gignac, signed for a reported 18million euros from Toulouse, is due to sign his contract tomorrow and also has a slight ankle complaint, while, more worringly, scans revealed Remy has a potential heart problem and will undergo further cardiac testing on Monday.
But the hosts, with Gignac and Remy watch from the stands, still had little problem finding a way past Lorient as Heinze put them ahead in the sixth minute.
Lucho Gonzalez had already seen a shot saved by Lionel Cappone when the goalkeeper was called into action again to keep out Andre Ayew's header, but Heinze was on hand to knock home the rebound.
Lorient came into the game and Arnold Mvuemba shot wide before Fabien Robert sent Kevin Gameiro clear, but the striker was denied by the legs of Steve Mandanda.
The Marseille goalkeeper was called into action again early in the second half to save a Gameiro curler.
Cappone then kept his side in the game with a fine low save to stop Taiwo's right-footed shot, cutting in from the left, at the other end.
Taiwo doubled OM's lead in the 72nd minute, though, pouncing after Gonzalez's corner fell to him and smashing the ball home.
The hosts had a chance to grab a third but Ayew's header flew just wide.
