Montpellier steal into Europa League |
|
Montpellier secured a place in the Europa League as they claimed victory at Paris St Germain on the final day of the Ligue 1 season.
Two goals from Geoffrey Dernis either side of half-time sandwiching a Lilian Compan effort did the damage for Montpellier, before Mevlut Erdinc pulled one back 11 minutes from time.
Perhaps there will be a hint of disappointment as for so long they were challenging for Champions League football, but it is a considerable achievement nonetheless for a team promoted from Ligue 2 last season.
The PSG fans vented their anger at a disappointing season and the game was briefly halted 15 minutes from the end as they lobbed flares into the pitch.
Montpellier were on the attack from the start, Victor Hugo Montano outflanking Sylvain Armand and sending in a cross-shot which Gregory Coupet needed two attempts to save.
The first came after 16 minutes. Dernis, free on the left, advanced into the penalty area and sent a beautiful curling effort into the far corner.
PSG could have equalised five minutes later as Guillaume Hoarau beat his man and goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren, but his effort was cleared off the line by Abdelhamid El Kaoutari.
Montpellier grabbed a second a minute into the second half, Compan volleying home after a goalmouth scramble.
And the PSG fans were quick to vent their anger when their side went 3-0 down just before the hour mark - Dernis again doing the damage with a low strike.
The game was briefly stopped as angry PSG fans threw flares onto the pitch.
And when play resumed, Erdinc gave them something to cheer as he converted Ludovic Giuly's cross.
