Lyon steal in front of Lille |
|
Lyon jumped up to second in Ligue 1 and an automatic place in next season's Champions League with a comfortable final day win at the Stade Gerland.
Bafetimbi Gomis and Miralem Pjanic scored the goals as Claude Puel's side benefited from Lille's defeat at Lorient.
They were dominant throughout and Aly Cissokho set up the evening's first chance for Gomis, who was denied by Didier Ovono at the near post.
The resulting corner from Pjanic was only half-cleared and fell to Jeremie Toulalan, whose shot skimmed the post and went wide.
Gomis volleyed inches over after being teed up by Anthony Reveillere, before a rare Le Mans break saw Mathieu Dossevi denied by keeper Hugo Lloris after a fine run and shot.
But Gomis made the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time, sliding the ball past Ovono after being found by Pjanic's header.
Gomis missed a clear chance to put his side further clear early in the second half when, one on one with Ovono, he somehow failed to hit the target.
Michel Bastos' free-kick flashed narrowly wide before Pjanic made the game safe in the 67th minute, sidefooting past Ovono from close range after a counter attack led by Lisandro Lopez.
Bastos' volley was repelled by Ovono in the closing stages as Lyon sought to make the margin of victory more emphatic, but they will once again be among Europe's elite next season despite trailing league champions Marseille by six points.
