Louis van Gaal: Inter deserved Bernabeu win |
 |
Louis van Gaal felt Inter Milan deserved to beat his Bayern Munich team to lift the Champions League, but midfielder Mark van Bommel was adamant the Nerazzurri were not the better side in Madrid.
Two goals from Inter striker Diego Milito ensured Inter won the Treble and claimed their first European Cup win for 45 years, leaving Bayern to reflect on a defeat that ended their own hopes of ending the season with three trophies.
While Van Gaal's side dominated possession and the coach felt it was a close contest, he paid tribute to an Inter side that disposed of Chelsea and Barcelona with determined performances en route to the final.
"We were not good enough to impose our game," Van Gaal said. "Inter only reacted, but they still won deservedly. The timing of the goals was decisive. The players learned today that it comes down to small details.
"I still have the feeling that we could have won. There were no great differences. We attacked, Inter defended, but you have to be in great shape to beat Inter and we were not today. I still think Inter merited the win."
Van Bommel did not feel Inter were superior to Bayern and highlighted a glaring miss from young forward Thomas Muller at the start of the second half as he contemplated a painful defeat.
"Not the better, but the more effective team won," Van Bommel said. "Had Muller scored, it may have been different. These are decisive moments. But no reproaches, Muller has scored so many goals this season."
